Gifts, Painting and Puzzle Organizing

Monday, June 14th, 2010

Here’s a blanket I made for my cousin’s baby shower. I’ll be making more of these for all the babies happening in the coming months – they’re super easy and so soft (not the babies, the blankets…well babies are soft…I digress). I just sandwiched a piece of fleece between pieces of printed flannel and solid cotton. After sewing them all together, turning out and stitching again all around, I randomly stitched through the layers with yarn to hold everything in place. (Of course, this is a photo of it all folded and tied up with yarn for wrapping.)

…and here’s the Nikki McClure print I’m giving Kyle for doing all the manual labor around the house while you’re gone (Dave)… I think he’s really going to like it.

Here the girls are, painting. They look great when they paint, don’t you think?

And now the girls are out of bed trying to convince me they’re suddenly scared of the dark and it’s not even dark outside yet…barely 9:00pm – geez. Olive’s telling me she’s scared of bumble bees. …convincing…

And finally…the most exciting thing of all. In preparation for the big cross county move, I’m streamlining some things around the house. Puzzles. I love them, but those stupid boxes take up so much space. It’s like a bag of chips – mostly air. Here’s what I did with the kids’ puzzles:

I cut the picture out of the box lid and put that and the pieces all in a zip lock. Now they take up like a millionth of the space. Nice.

I’m on vacation…kind of

Monday, May 31st, 2010

It really is my vacation though, the more I think about it. It’s my week long break that splits up Dave’s and my five month-ish separation while he starts his new job and leaves the country for a bit. So, he’s in the D.C. area now, living with friends and working and this week he took vacation so I could come for a visit. I haven’t lifted a finger. It’s been wonderful. Oh yeah, and it’s HOT here. Geez!

So, I have a few more days here and we may look at a place or two. I’m still getting my mind wrapped around the fact that we’ll be living here in a few short months, so looking at places may kind of freak me out…we’ll see. I’ll add some photos as soon as I take them.

New Bag, New Book

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Some funny things the girls said recently:

Olive was “making her letters” the other day; scribbling in her notebook and asking me what’s what’s…
Me: That’s a double you, Olive.
Olive: Yeah, double me!

Mona asked me where her “sweaty pants” were. (I think she meant sweat pants. She also wears her “cracky” pants with her school polo for field trips.)

Oh yeah, and apparently there is a witch with horns in their bedroom on a regular basis around bedtime……shadow of a wiener dog with sort of perky (well, half perky, half my spirit’s been killed by two toddlers over time, perky) ears, perhaps?

Got some new stuff…

I had a certain gift card to a certain store and got this. I’m a little hooked on Vera.

I just received this new book in the mail and LOVE it.

DSC_0011 (Small)

Check it out.

DSC_0012 (Small)

The photos are GREAT.

DSC_0015 (Small)

The instructions seem clear.

DSC_0014 (Small)

The projects are practical.

DSC_0013 (Small)

And the materials are neat.

I am totally going to make everything in it. Maybe. Probably not. I’ll keep you posted.

2010 Sewing Calendar, Part IV & Long and productive Valentine Weekend

Monday, February 15th, 2010

DSC_0020 (Small)

So we painted our bedroom this weekend. Accidentally did a semi-gloss instead of satin finish – oops, my bad. I actually don’t mind it being shiny in there and it’ll be just that much easier to clean when Olive colors. We actually had a really productive weekend all in all. Dave took all the trim out of the bedroom and we primed it on Saturday. Most of it was really dark blue. Really dark blue. So, we did about three coats of primer. I really wish I would have taken a before picture because it’s so different now. We continued with the actual paint yesterday and it’s “crisp linen white”. Huge difference. No after pictures yet though because we still need to replace the windows and trim next weekend. It’ll be like a whole new room. Rad.

My Valentine’s Day was fairly awesome considering we were painting. I was actually able to do 2010 Sewing Calendar, Part III. And, though I scrubbed my whole body with a fingernail brush (not sure why I decided to wear extra short shorts and a short sleeve, v-neck t-shirt to paint in; oh, and bare feet), I did end up lying in the bathtub, eating a box of chocolates. Yes, that’s right, ate a box of chocolates in the tub. Strange and wonderful. Thanks Dave.

I was so glad to have an extra day off work today. The girls and I totally hung out together doing stuff. I almost peed myself when I discovered my box of chocolates from the day before had a second layer. It’s the little things. Then, we went outside and they played in the rock tire with their Valentine buckets and shovels. Nothing like getting brand new beach buckets in February. Also, you can probably imagine my enthusiasm when Mona put on her “wedding dress” (the dress she wears to weddings, a.k.a. the nicest one in her closet) to rock the rock tire. Did some outside chores. The dogs taught the girls a whole new level of gross as Mona reported to me that “Carl is eating Walter’s poop right now!”. Awesome.

I did something today that I’ve never done before. Made pudding. Really. Then, after some cleaning and what not, we got down to some crafty business. I made the sewing calendar project from February 1: Matyroshka Doll Pocket Pillow by Lauren Brandy from goody-goody handmade. Really cute pattern and it turned out like the picture, so that means it was easy to follow, even for me.

Here are some photos of my creative process…

DSC_0001 (Small)

Never underestimate the value of taking time to make a good pattern. I learned the hard way. I always use cereal boxes now.

DSC_0002 (Small)

I was able to get through 80% of the project during Olive’s nap time and while Mona watched Betty Boop next to me.

DSC_0003 (Small)

DSC_0004 (Small)

Here they are in various stages of face.

DSC_0008 (Small)

I changed up the face just a tad. I was really close to not doing the lashes, but there’s a fine line between being too lazy to do the lashes and choosing not to do them for design reasons, so I did the lashes. I got really crazy and added cheeks too. I think I need to embroider more. It was fun.

DSC_0006 (Small)

Guess who joined me sewing? She really did. She even threaded her own needle once. It was a blunt tapestry needle with a huge eye, but still.

DSC_0007 (Small)

I think I might sort of know how my mom felt when she bought me my first (and only) sewing machine when I was 9.

Then, Olive woke up and joined us on the couch. She’s after my heart too, as she has very recently adopted my own first teddy bear. She’s been sleeping with it for the past three nights or so. Cute. It’s music box still works and everything. I totally remember listening to that song in my bed when I was little.

DSC_0013 (Small)

I was able to finish up my sewing project with the girls in the sewing room.

DSC_0014 (Small)

Here’s one stuffed. I almost like them better flat. So, I stuffed them loose…

DSC_0015 (Small)

The girls were getting all creative in there with me. Mona was making a “lady”. Olive was being all artsy-fartsy too, but she was buck naked, so no photos of her this time.

DSC_0016 (Small)

Here’s the “lady” Mona made me. I’m so excited for her. She traced something, cut it out, drew on it, and glued a fabric skirt on her that she cut out herself and even wrapped it around so her bottom isn’t bare. Maybe she will like to sew like me. I definitely think Olive will like to sew because she calls her bottom her “bobbin”. That’s a sure sign, right?

DSC_0017 (Small)

Here’s the finished project again. I’m glad I decided to make four. They are even cooler as a…herd? Gaggle? Gang. Totally.

Yolli shoe freak out

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

DSC_0003 (Small)

So, I discovered Yolli Shoes, downtown. It’s been there for a while but I don’t get out much, so it’s new to me. I had a total freak out last week with Jen and bought these boots…

DSC_0004 (Small)

I won’t tell you how much they cost. It’s embarrassing. Enough that I thought putting them on layaway would be the sensible thing to do. They were on layaway for approximately three hours. I couldn’t handle not taking them home with me that night. I did learn something from the experience though – I’m not a very good candidate for layaway.

Went back a week later and got this

DSC_0001 (Small)

and these

DSC_0007 (Small)

I’m on restriction from the store for at least 30 days…

Here’s a little something from yesterday. They got all dressed up for pictures…so many prints, so little time.

How to make an easy giftwrap bow…

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

DSC_0102 (Small)

So, while wrapping holiday gifts, I experimented with a quick and easy bow out of gift wrap and thought I would share. Works great when all you have is wrap and no ribbon. I didn’t take a photo for each step because we were busy wrapping, so hopefully you will get the idea if you want to…

Take a rectangular scrap of wrapping paper and fold it in half so the fold is on the short length. Then cut every half inch or so up close to the fold.

DSC_0095 (Small)

Then curl each strip with scissors.

DSC_0096 (Small)

Should look similar to this when it’s all curled.

DSC_0097 (Small)

Then fold the center portion a couple of times and use it to secure the bow to the package with tape.

Voila!

Issues

Saturday, December 12th, 2009

So, we’ve been having pc issues for the last few weeks. Virus or whatever. Since have stripped our laptop and are in the process of getting everything back in order with the help of family, friends, and coworkers. We’re not computer proteges, at least not me for sure. The whole cluster did result in one good thing that we’ve needed to do for a long time anyway, and that is getting an external hard drive.

Anyway, I still can’t upload blog photos, but soon…maybe days…I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

My holiday gift giving plans early this year were all about handmade (and gift cards where appropriate – I know not everyone is cut out to receive something handmade). Anyway, the goal at the time seemed very lofty, but surprisingly, the table in the back room is covered with gifts, may of which are in fact handmade by me. It’s only Dec. 12. I’m a little shocked. I’ll have photos soon.

November 1st and my new best friend

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

dsc054221

Not bad for November 1st, huh? It was like low 60’s or something.

We went for a little hike/walk in the morning…

dsc053831

Then, I finally chopped down the tomato plants. We simmered soup with a bunch of these.

dsc054231

It was surprisingly good.

Now – because you’re probably dying to know – meet my new best friend:

dsc053381

…no, that’s me. It’s that fabulous neck warmer I’m referring to.

So, about a year ago I made a baby hat with that super soft yarn and I had a very small amount left and I was traveling on airplanes and whatnot and I was out of projects to work on so I just crocheted up the last of it in the airport and it came out to a fairly small rectangle – like a quarter of a scarf or something. It would have made a perfect tube top for Carl…

dsc041121

…but instead, I just put it in a drawer and proceeded with the rest of my year. Then, the other day I was pulling out some of my partially crocheted stuff and I ran across it again and because the yarn is so artificially soft, I just really wanted it to be something and ended up spending about 30 seconds connecting the two ends, slipped it over my head, and kind of fell in love.

Now, when I wear it I keep it on all day and it’s really part of my outfit and I’m so warm. It even looks good with some of my work clothes, which I had a heck of a time taking a photo in while hiding the logo on my top. It’s so much better than trying to wear a scarf all day at work. There are no hangy downy ends to get in the way. I wish I would have thought of it sooner…like last winter when my neck was cold.

I’ll leave you with two of my favorite photos of Olive sleeping. Yes, she is totally, completely, sound asleep in both of these photos.

The magic that is Target

Monday, October 12th, 2009

Does this happen to you? You go to Target with a list of three things to get:

1. Rubbing alcohol
2. Diapers
3. Tampons

You end up spending approximately $150 on this instead

dsc051881

I don’t get surprised at the check out anymore. It happens every time. Lame. (I did get a birthday gift, baby shower gift, and Christmas gift though, so it’s not a total loss, just kind of lame.)

I did get something productive accomplished today. I made Ramona’s birthday invitations. I decided to send the adults evites and make the kid ones. These came very close to getting cut from the list of things to do though. Birthday’s Saturday – today is Monday. I generally over plan and make a huge list of birthday party things to do and then several of them end up on the chopping block. These barely escaped, and I’m glad because I like them.

They only took an hour from idea to mailbox. I’m really stoked that they’re not going to be sitting on the desk sans postage a week from now.

Haven’t touched my winter project

and I helped the girls make pumpkin people because they were begging to carve them, but I kept telling them that if we carved them this early, they’d end up looking like uncle Mark’s jack-o-lanterns, and then we’d have to pressure wash them off the porch.

dsc051791

I still haven’t decided if Olive’s is a person or a pet of some sort. So far, she hasn’t quite been able to articulate an answer to that question herself. Oh well. BTW, the brown stuff is doll hair. For realsies.

And I’ll leave you with this tiny piece of entertainment (it was entertaining to me anyway). This is what we found the other night when we went in to tuck the girls in on our way to bed.

dsc051811

I literally had to excavate Olive out of Mona’s bed to get her into her own. By the time I got her out, I counted 3 books, 4 dolls, 2 bears, 5 blankets, 3 pillows, 2 girls, and 1 wiener dog (carl may have been in there somewhere too, but I never saw him).

Come on girls, it’s a toddler bed, not a clown car …hmmm…that reminds me of a forward email I received not long ago that made me laugh…).
