Tablecloth Dress

So I had this vintage tablecloth that Mom gave me quite a while back and I used it all the time like a real tablecloth…as in, on the table, eating, with kids, constantly. Anyway, after a few years, it was holey and stained and pretty much done for.

So for a while now, I’ve wanted to make a skirt out of it. Then, I was inspired by this post and decided to make a dress out of it by sewing a top to it. Coincidentally, the blue tank in this post worked out perfectly with the colors.

So I cut five rectangles out of the tablecloth wherever it wasn’t stained or holey. Then, I hemmed each rectangle individually and sewed them together on the long edges. Once they were all together in an extra large tube, I darted each seam where I’d sewn the rectangles together. This made the waist begin to take shape. I then sewed the waist part of the tube to the bottom of the tank top, creating box pleats evenly around the skirt. It fit perfectly on the first try, I think because the tank is stretchy knit. The tank also had a rolled hem that conveniently rolls up and over the stitching to hide it.

I’ve since worn it and washed it and it turned out great!
